Wondering...

... why is it that in every movie with a labor/birthing scene the poor woman is always screaming in agony as she pushes the baby out? How come they never seem to opt for an epidural? I mean, I know there are some freaks... I mean... very strong women who prefer to do it "naturally," but come on! Every character in every show? Please. They need to get some better movie-doctors.

I think it's to instill fear in people to try and control the population...

And I won't take it personal that you labeled me a freak :)

I know! I actually did the natural thing - not by choice, mind you - and kept fairly controlled. One nurse remarked that she was impressed. "Every woman who comes in here thinks she has to scream about this," she said. My mother had a midwife with one of my sisters who told her to "be quiet, that noise isn't necessary." Mother said she never made another noise during labor - the remaining five "natural" as well.

It's drama. That's all they're going for.

I saw a birth once (in real life--not a movie) that was exactly like the movies depict, screaming included. That was the moment I knew that I wouldn't even think of having a child without an epidural.

Mary, I'm with you! I'm not saying labor doesn't hurt - it DOES! I'm just wondering why screen writers never think to take into account modern medical progress.
Though, I'm sure you're right, Sally, it's a whole lot more dramatic.
